As early as October 27, 2020, Xi'an International Medical Center Hospital obtained the "Proton Radiation Therapy System Configuration License" issued by the National Health Commission. On September 25, 2022, the proton therapy center project began construction. The total construction area is 14103.58 square meters, with one floor above ground and one floor underground, which houses the proton therapy center, boron neutron therapy center, and Class IV standard nuclear drug center. In terms of equipment, the proton therapy center uses the latest generation ProBeam 360 degree proton therapy system from the world's top manufacturer Varian Company. This system can provide fully integrated Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT), leading the industry with superconducting cyclotron, 360 degree rotating frame, and high-speed pen beam scanning technology. It is currently one of the world's top proton therapy systems. At present, the core component of the proton therapy system - the cyclotron - has been successfully beamed out in the production plant.

The principle of proton therapy is to strip protons from hydrogen atoms and accelerate them to 2/3 of the speed of light, and then introduce them to the treatment room through a beam transport system. After entering the human body, the proton beam has a fast initial movement speed and less energy deposition. At the end of the range, it quickly forms a steep dose peak - the Bragg peak, which explodes cancer cells at a fixed point. Doctors can adjust the position of the Bragg peak in the human body by controlling the energy of the proton beam.

Unlike the traditional chemotherapy bomb therapy of "killing one thousand enemies and self damaging eight hundred", protons are more like "missiles", targeting tumor cells and precision strikes to achieve "three-dimensional directional blasting" of tumors. They have advantages such as high accuracy and minimal side effects, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues and organs.
